What is Digital Surveillance? 

How does it compare to analog surveillance systems? 

Why would I want a digital surveillance system over a analog system? 

Well the answer to these questions is quite apparent when you compare the speed, proficiency, space saving and ease of use to that of the analog systems. 

First off, analog systems are bulky.  What is the one thing you have to have to make an analog system work?  A long playing VCR right?  What then do you have to have?  VCR Tapes right?  Now where to store all of those tapes? 

Secondly, have you ever tried to search for an event on a VCR tape?  The hours spent fast forwarding to the time and the event that you are looking for? 

With Digital Surveillance systems, it puts an end to all of the problems you see with analog surveillance systems.

How does Digital Surveillance work? 

Digital Surveillance takes the power of camera images, and stores in a digital format directly to your computer hard drive!  The video surveillance can then be stored onto CD Media or other types of media for archiving or later use.  This alone saves time and space in storing archived surveillance footage. 

Through the digital surveillance software, the user can quickly and easily, find an event, by querying a search, or putting in the time and date that the event occurred.  By the recording being in digital format, there is no fast forwarding to the event.  The digital format allows the user to go directly to the event date and time in a matter of seconds. 

The digital surveillance software also can do many other things an analog system can not do.  For example, the digital surveillance can be programmed to record at specific times during the day or night, or even set recording only for motion detection and can adjust color balance for low light situations.   

How about being able to view your cameras from the Internet?  Try that with an analog system? 

Yes, with proper equipment, you can tunnel into your office/camera system from anywhere in the world, and view what is going on at your location.  The digital software can also send an email to you or someone else with a picture of a changed object when camera is in motion detection or scheduled recording.  Analog systems can not do that! 

The digital software can also do what is called "Intelligent record technology".  What this allows a user to do is search an event by items displayed in the scene or items that have changed during a transition period.  This saves time, because the user can now search based on content and changes that occurred during the surveillance footage without knowing the date and time in which the event occurred!  A huge advantage over analog systems! 

How expensive is a digital surveillance system? 

Believe it or not digital surveillance hardware and software is sometimes cheaper than analog systems.
